There’s a village in the southwest corner of China called Lv Shui in Yunnan Province, not far from the Laos and Myanmar borders. To reach it requires two flights from Beijing and a six-hour drive through mountainous terrain.
The area endures a subtropical climate and has been in a drought situation for nearly three years.
In 2008, the Wenchuan earthquake devastated the province in which this village sits. Throughout the province, over 69,000 people lost their lives and over 18,000 went missing. All eight churches around Lv Shui were completely destroyed.
Western mission groups rarely visit this area because it’s too far out of the way, but this past June, we responded to the call through our Chinese partnership, and distributed 7,000 Bibles to the area.
Bonnie and I joyfully took the long journey and we’ll never forget it! Early morning wake-up calls, winding roads, extremely hot weather of 40 degrees celsius, and the non air-conditioned van full of people were all memorable experiences.
But the reception of the local Christians—the joy on their faces, their expressions of worship through songs of praise, and their heartfelt hospitality—will be forever entrenched in our minds and spirit. These are a people who know the sustaining power of God through great tribulation.
Pastors from seven other churches in the area joined in the celebration. Their buildings had all been rebuilt after the earthquake. They waited with anticipation for the supply of Scriptures they’d been promised.
All were eager to unload the truck, stacking the Bibles at the front of the church in readiness for distribution. After we preached the gospel, pastors were invited forward to receive their boxes of Scripture to take back to their home churches.
These Bibles were so needed due to the number of people receiving Christ in the area.
Truly, God’s Spirit is very active in this corner of China. There is a move of God such that, daily, people are being added to the church as in the book of Acts.
What an exciting privilege! As we provide the needed Scriptures, the church can continue to evangelize and grow. All glory to God!
