I Am Loved

“I will beat you every week until you stop going to that church!”

These words are a harsh reality for Devya, a Bengali woman who attended a Bible distribution event, at great personal risk. Pastor Billy, our local partner, told us the story of when she came to receive her Bible. The bruises and scars on her body were evidence that Devya is not even safe in her own home.

Yet this does not stop her from going to church and worshipping. In the early hours of the day before her alcoholic husband wakes, she travels to church to worship Jesus. Her husband waits for her to return to follow through on his threats of physical abuse. But Devya persists in attending church and trusts God to protect her, because she has encountered Jesus through a Bible she received thanks to your gift.

Even in the midst of persecution, lost people are encountering God’s Word and coming to know Him as their Saviour! And you have an important role to play.

Recently, our Indian-based staff member [Philip] led an evangelism training event at a hotel in India. After the training, the hotel owner approached Philip, and told him that he loved that the magazine was written in Hindi and looked beautiful. “Would you give me 40 magazines to put in the hotel rooms, both in Hindi and in English?” the owner asked. Though we don’t often place Scriptures in hotels in India, Philip agreed and placed a copy of Light magazine in every room. Praise God that donors made it possible for Philip to have enough magazines on hand!

Soon after, two hotel guests called the owner and told him, “We [read] the Light magazine… The book says a lot about Jesus Christ, and it looks like he’s a light, he’s God. We want to know about it.” So the owner connected them to a local pastor, who invited them to church but they refused to go because they feared excommunication from their community. The pastor then asked the hotel owner, “The two people from your hotel don’t want to come to church because they are afraid. Will you give a room for us to have a service?” The hotel owner agreed.

Those who cannot go to church buildings because they fear persecution now come to the hotel to worship God.

Just a simple donation has the potential to change lives and cause a ripple effect of gospel impact in India. The Bible that changed Devya’s life and the Scripture magazines that began a secret church in a hotel were only available because you decided to act.

Your gift directly results in someone receiving a copy of God’s Word, which can have a ripple effect, potentially impacting several lives just like the hotel church! Will you help illuminate darkness today?
